Clearing & Cleaning

At the moment I am reading Zerolimits by Joe Vitale, it is making me realise how much I need to clean and clear both internally and externally.  So as motivation and a reminder for myself I created this picture, with the Hawaiian Ho’oponopono words on.

I love you. I am sorry

My Pocket Buddy Hand Sanitiser Review

I was sent a My Pocket Buddy Hand Sanitiser from Opure to review.  Firstly I don’t use a regular hand santitiser on my kids or me and I don’t use wet wipes as I dislike the smell and the taste they leave behind.  I also don’t like the idea of all the nasty chemicals in them.  So I was excited when I was asked to review this product.  When I recieved My Pocket Buddy I tried it out, no odour or taste that is good and no stickiness. So I put the pen in my bag and sort of forgot about it, until I took my son out Kayaking on our local river and it was snack time.  A couple of squirts on his hands and he was eating his crisps with no fuss at all, brilliant!  So anytime we are having a picnic somewhere, out comes My Pocket Buddy.  It is also great used with a tissue for cleaning up sticky fingers.

My Pocket Buddy Hand Sanitiser

My Pocket Buddy Hand Sanitiser

I think this product is brilliant below are a list of the features that I love about it:

  • It is easy to slip in your bag or even a coat pocket for when you are out and about.  Or you can put it in with a packed lunch for children going on trips
  • It is great value at 0.96, yes I have typed that correctly less than a £1 or £2.88 for 3 Buy My Pocket Buddy Hand Sanitiser here
  • It has no odour or taste
  • My Pocket Buddy is easy to use and doesn’t dry your skin
  • If you have more than one child, each child can have their own and write their name on it to save arguments

Here is the information that Opure says about My Pocket Buddy

This product is great for mums with children, but I would also say it would be great for people that go camping or anyone that works outside and maybe can’t get to wash their hands.

I love this product and would highly recommend My Pocket Buddy and would give it 5/5

This review is my own opinion of the product.  I was sent 2 My pocket Buddy pens to try, so that I could write this post.

Fairtrade Fairies

Fairtrade Fairy

Fairtrade Fairy

One of my favourite products that I stock over on Green Aspirations are the Fairtrade Fairies.  They are designed in the UK and handmade in India.  They are beautiful and a joy for any little girl to recieve, they also make a huge difference to the people in India that make them.  Below is a video about how the fairies are made and what happens with some of the profits.

Please think of the benefits your presents can provide to the people that make them.

Vintage Actually – Guest Post

Today’s post is a guest post by Rachel Jones of Vintage Actually, an on-line shop which specialises in vintage, retro and recycled furniture and homeware.

Rachel says “I took voluntary redundancy earlier in the year to allow me to set up Vintage Actually, as I wanted to do something that reflected my training (BA in Conservation & Restoration) and my love of vintage furniture.”

Red Stool Crochet

Red Stool Crochet seat

This love of vintage furniture began a few years ago when I decided to purge my house of modern flatpack furniture and started to buy pieces from junk shops, ebay and car boot sales to repair, restore and recycle.  I wanted to move away from the disposable nature that a lot of mass-produced furniture has and use well-made pieces that could be individualised.  However, this approach takes vision, time and work, but it is so worth it and extremely satisfying when an item is finished and ready for its new lease of life.

At Vintage Actually furniture is restored or re-painted, re-upholstered (I have trained in and continue to attend traditional upholstery classes) and made unique.  Amongst my favourite re-vamped pieces are these crochet topped stool, vintage Parker Knoll chair and 1960s’ side table.

The best thing about re-using furniture from the past is that it is made to last, it is usually solid, good quality and has character, the odd knock, scuff and scratch is nothing to worry about, it is after all, part of that items history.

Greenscents Cleaning Products

For the past couple of weeks I have been testing greenscents cleaning products that they very kindly sent me to review.  The products include Citrus Washing Up Liquid, Minty Multi surface cleaner and the Nonscents Laundry Liquid.

I love the Citrus Washing Up Liquid, firstly is smells lovely, however if you don’t like citrus it also comes in an unfragranced version too.  I live in quite a hard water area so sometimes natural washing up liquids don’t foam very well or they do initially but then don’t last.  This was not the case with this washing up liquid it foamed well and the bubbles stayed till I had finished washing up.   It was also fantastic at cutting through grease.  It is good value for money compared to other similiar eco-friendly products at £2.50 for 500ml.

Greenscents Cleaning Products Review

Greenscents Cleaning Products

Minty Multi Surface Spray again this smelt gorgeous, the minty smell was fresh.  If you don’t like a Minty smell in a surface cleaner they also come in Lavender, Citrus, Herbal and unfragranced.  The sprayer worked well and it cleaned brilliantly.  It is anti-bacterial so perfect for cleaning the bathroom or kitchen.   It is good value at £3.95 for 750ml.

Minty product blend

Nonscents Laundry Liquid again this product worked well in my hard water, I didn’t use a fabric conditioner with it, as I don’t use it as I find getting washing on the washing line means my clothes are soft and don’t need ironing, I also don’t own a tumble drier.  Using this product meant my clothes were soft and clean as usual.  The nonscents version is suitable for people with sensitive skin, the product also comes in Lavender if you prefer your washing to be fragranced.  £4.75 for 750ml

All the greenscents product are made in Dulverton, Somerset using Exmoor water.  The products also use organic and ethically sourced ingredients.  They are certified organic by the Soil Association.

I would give these products 4.5/5 Green stars and the Green and Natural Living seal of approval.  I would recommend these products to anyone who is looking for a green product to use instead of their usual chemical cleaner.

If you would like a chance to win a set of greenscent cleaning products including the products I have reviewed above.  Please add a comment below, like my facebook page Green Aspirations and like greenscents facebook page.  I will then choose a person at random on Tuesday 28th August at 5.00pm to win the greenscents cleaning set.  If you have not liked both facebook pages and commented below you will not be eligible to win.

For this post I received the products to try at home. I was also sent other sets, one of which I am using as a prize here.  I will also run another competition on Twitter.

Getting creative – Upcycling

It is the summer holidays and entertaining children, working and keeping on top of the housework is proving a little challenging.  Time seems to be lacking.  However during my time on Facebook over the last week or so, I have found some fantastic and creative ideas for re-using or upcylcing waste.   So just in case you don’t follow Green Aspirations on Facebook I thought I would share them in a post.

Side Table Bookcase

Old wooden reel to Side Table Bookcase

Upcycling a reel, which had cabling on it, into a table/bookshelf, very clever and space saving too.  Go across to Pinkxstitches blog to see how this was created.

If you want a project to make a little girl very happy, try getting an old cabinet and converting it into a play kitchen.  I found this on Mum’s Business Facebook page.

As the weather has been nice recently what about upcycling an old tyre into a see saw for a young child.

See saw made from an old tyre.

Found this on Upcycling’s facebook page.

If you are not into spending too much time on your re-use projects and love to bake then have you thought of using a trouseur hanging to hold your recipe book?  This was shared by BuzzFeed on their facebook page.

So what are your favourite re-use ideas? Please share them here or on Green Aspirations Facebook page.

31 Green Living tips Part 1 – Reduce your waste

Living greener can be fun and save you money.  Here are 10 tips to reduce your waste.

  1. Reduce the waste you produce by thinking before you buy.  Do you need it?  Could you buy it second hand?  Could you buy a product with less packaging?
  2. Reuse packaging waste – glass jam jars are great to re-use for lots of things.  Reuse a pringles top to cover half full tins of food in the fridge or cat food stored in a cupboard.
  3. Always take reuseable shopping bags with you when you go shopping to reduce the number of plastic carrier bags being used.
  4. Make gifts and cards for people or buy from crafters at Craft fairs reduces packaging and helps local people trying to make a living from their craft.
  5. Baking your own cakes reduces packaging waste, taste great and saves you money.  Ali on Over a Cuppa has some quick and easy recipes if you are new to baking.  Or check out the recipes on the Be-Ro site.
  6. Always send your old clothes and shoes to charity shops or into clothes recycling banks so they can be re-used.
  7. Recycle all your cans, paper, cardboard and plastic bottles so that they can be made into new materials, saving energy and natural resources.
  8. Make your own skincare products and store in re-used containers
  9. Home compost your veg peelings, tea bags and grass cuttings.   You can then use the compost to add nutrients back to the soil.  Or if you have a kerbside collection of green waste make sure you use it, as biodegradeable waste produces methane when it rots down in a landfill site.
  10. Grow your own organic vegetables and fruit.  If you aren’t a gardener check out some blogs to learn from other people.

All these tips will help you reduce the waste you produce and some will save you money too.  To find out more about recycling have a look at the Recycle Now website.

Green People Self Tan Lotion

Green People Self Tan Lotion

Green People sent me their Self Tan Lotion to try and I loved it.  I would never make it on to The Only Way is Essex with my complexion.  I like to think of myself more of a classic English Rose, which means even when we do have some nice summer weather, I still have pasty white legs.  I don’t usally use Self Tan lotion because a) I tried one in the past and it didn’t seem to make much difference b) there aren’t many natural Self Tan Lotions that I have found.

As some of my regular readers know I love to go salsa dancing, when I go dancing there are lots of people that have varying shades of tan, so I tend to keep my pasty white legs hidden away.  However not any more, now that I have Green People’s Self Tan Lotion in my bathroom cabinet, I will be wearing skirts and dresses to show of my naturally tanned legs.

So why do I love this product so much?

  • My legs went from white to a lightly tanned colour
  • My skin felt lovely and soft afterwards
  • Pleasant smell – “Gently scented with a blend of organic Sandalwood, Rose Geranium and Vetivert essential oils.” is the wording on the box.
  • Not tested on animals and no nasty chemicals
  • A little goes a long way
  • Good value for money at £17.95 for 200ml considering the product contains 89.5% organic ingredients
  • Easy to apply

I would give this product 5/5 Green stars and the Green and Natural Living seal of approval.  I would recommend this product to anyone that was wanting to try a Self Tan Lotion.

The Self Tan Lotion contains skin-softening Rosehip oil which helps moisturise and soothe the skin.  DHA which is derived from sugar, forms brown pigments that give your skin a non streaky naturally tanned appearance.  Please be aware that the product doesn’t contain any UV filter.

For anyone like me that doesn’t use Self Tan products, Green People have written a great blog post about achieving the perfect natural fake tan.  I don’t have sensitive skin but the product does say suitable for all skin types.

So if you would like to feel a little more like summer has arrived, treat yourself to some Green People Self Tan Lotion.  Green People also do a great 20ml trial size tube for only £4.50 if you want to try it out before buying a full sized product.

This review is my own opinion of the product.  I was sent a Green People’s Self Tan Lotion (full sized 200ml) to try, so that I could write this post.

This post contains affliate links, if you purchase some Green People Self Tan Lotion or any of their other products using one of the links I will earn a small commission.

31 Green Living Tips for July

Yes I am going to try and do the Ultimate Blog Challenge again.  I tried to do it back in January and failed didn’t quite make it, I managed 7 posts.  So how can I make it through this time?  I learn from my mistakes that’s how.  So this time I am going to do shorter Green Living Tips rather than full 300-400 blog posts and link to other websites and articles, so less waffle should mean it is easier for me to write a blog post once a day.  Also I need to plan and schedule posts.  Wish me luck!

Would you like to go Green but not sure where to start?  Well follow my blog over the next month for daily Green Living Tips.  Try the ones you like and leave me comments on how you are getting on.

Green Living Tip 1 – Reduce your waste

For as long as I can remember I have been interested in environmental issues and have worked in various environmental fields including the waste collection industry.  Before I had children I worked as a Recycling Officer for a local council and for a private waste collection company, so I have seen both sides of recycling.  When I was a Recycling Officer I would do talks on recycling and the main theme would be the Waste Heirarchy or Reduce Reuse and Recycle.

So todays tip is Reduce what you throw away.  Reducing what you throw away saves resources, energy and money.

Think before you buy something, do you need it.  Will you use the 2 punnets of strawberries or will some end up being thrown away.  Or can you freeze them to use later.

Is something you are about to buy over packaged? Is there an alternative you could buy that has less packaging? Or could you buy something second hand to save buying something new?

So think before you buy to reduce what you waste and save yourself some money too.

Green People Natural and Organic Skincare Products

I love to use natural organic skincare products on mine and my children’s skin, one of my favourite companies is Green People.  The products are fantastic and great value for money especially considering the organic ingredients they contain.  They have the usual skin, hair and bodycare products for women.  They also have a selection of products for the rest of the family from their baby range to skincare products for teenage skins, suncare products, natural make up and various products for men.  I love that there is loads of information on their website about the products.  They even do some of the products in handy trial sizes, which are great for trying the products or for taking on weekends away.  There is a range of vegan products as well.

Have a look at this video of Charlotte the founder of Green People talking about how Green People started out and her favourite products.

I also love Charlotte’s book Naturally Gorgeous, which I just happen to be re-reading at the moment and if you spend £40 or more on the Green People website you can get her book for free quoting A144307476 Offer valid 11th June to 31st June 2012.

This post contains  affliate links, which means I will get a small percentage if you buy from Green People, there is no extra cost to you.  However the views are all my own and I do use Green People products on me and my children.
